Chinese all over the world celebrate Chinese New Year when the Lunar Year begins. On Tuesday, February 9th 2016 we asked the children to wear red clothes or cheongsam. We also decorated the school with mei hwa flowers, red lanterns were hang on the ceilings, and an artificial Mandarin orange plant was placed in the big pot. In our school’s celebration of Chinese New Year for this year, we enjoyed the drama which performed by some teachers and kids. Through this drama, the children understood the meaning of Chinese new year decoration such as red lantern, to bring light and red means happiness, and mei hwa flowers which has a good meaning because this flower can grow stronger on every season. The common food that we usually prepare on Imlek (Indonesian term for Chinese New Year) is the basket cake or Nian Gao, it has a sweet taste and it means that people are hoping for a year round sweetness. Then we end the program by singing Gong XI song and continued with many fun activities such as eating noodles with chopstick, moving Mandarin orange with spoon and moving beans with chopstick. This celebration is educational and remarkable for the children.
